In an endless quest for natural beauty and unforgettable memories, Mangrove Birding Journeys was born with the vision to share the overwhelming biodiversity of Costa Rica’s Central Pacific.
Surrounded by mangrove forest, Pacific coast sunsets, and Carara National Park, we are located on the world-renowned crocodile-river, Rio Grande de Tarcoles. The Central Pacific is home to the largest population of American Crocodiles in Central America; many of which exceed 5meters in length, and 600kilos in weight. An incredible 327 species of bird also make their home here.

Over the past three decades, we have been blending our expertise in biology, conservation, photography, and business, to create a tour operator that is leading the way for others to follow.
After carefully observing the local nature for more than 25 years, we have taken steps to make a positive change in the life of all flora and fauna in the Central Pacific. By following the key principles of sustainable growth, and environmental awareness, we have improved the services that we offer; reducing their impact on the natural environment. At Mangrove Birding Journeys, nature comes first, and our responsible practices, and approaches to the natural world, are our fingerprint.
Concerned that pollution is degrading our ecosystems, such as rivers, mangrove swamps, and tropical beaches, we have partnered with several non-profit organizations to maintain a healthy river for crocodiles, birds, fish, and other species. This also has a positive effect on the adjoining mangrove swamps, and beaches.
Mangrove Birding Journeys is aware of the huge need to leave a positive legacy behind. Therefore, since 2018, and as part of our growing presence in the community, we have also been working on environmentally conscientious projects, and genuinely believe in the mantra: ‘Think globally, act locally’.
Dedicated to offering the finest nature experiences, we have put together a collection of tours that seek to meet the demands of our clientele. Whether you are a family group wishing to see crocodiles, monkeys, and toucans; a physically challenged birdwatcher; a worldwide birder with 6000 birds on your life list; or a National Geographic award-winning photographer, we have the tour for you. Our tour boats are suitable for wheelchair users, and photographers with tripods.
Mangrove Birding Journeys is not only a serious birding tour company; we are also unique in the Americas, by being the only photography tour operator to offer workshops, expeditions, and day-tours, with prestigious Nikon camera gear included. Whether you have never used a professional camera before, or you are on a photographic assignment for the New York Times, we use nothing but the best nikkor prime lenses, of 600-500-400-300mm optics, for the enjoyment of all nature lovers.
As if that was not enough, we also offer specialized scientific tours to observe the country’s population of endangered Scarlet Macaws, and the ONLY Night River Boat Tour in Costa Rica. This all new tour experience is like no other in the country; as we venture into the elusive lives of nocturnal creatures, like filmmakers on the Discovery Channel.
